Chris Paul should be MVP

Posted on: May 6, 2008 4:57 pm

How can they pass on this young man. Dont say it is because it is his first great year. Isnt the MVP the best player in the league for that year. Why dont they just give it to Michael Jordan since he is still the best player EVER in the NBA. You award the best player THIS year. I hate this, every time this year this drives me crazy.

Chris Paul should be MVP

The MVP award has always been a crap shoot in any sport.  It will usually go to the guy with the best PR department.  I don't dislike Kobe getting it.  For years he has been criticized for being a showboat and just scoring.  Now this year he seems to score when he needs to and gets others involved at other times.  He is also a great defender.  He probably won a few votes just by playing with his hurt pinkie.  You may ask would he have won without Gasol in the lineup.  Probably not.  The lakers seem to have come together this year now that Gasol is there.  What about Paul?  I have heard great things about him.  He is just a long ways from Hollywood or NYC.  That doesn't mean he will never win.  It is just that each voter has his own yardstick.  Maybe they should redefine the award as Most Votes Procured.

Chris Paul should be MVP

CP3 will win at least one MVP, probably more barring injury. Kobe deserves to win this year based on what he has done this year (2nd in scoring and probable All NBA Defensive Team.) Like any election, popularity, politics and name recognition are going to be factors. Paul is a worthy candidate and anyone can make a winning argument for him to get the award. This year, there are several players who are all equally deserving, but only one can win and if its only because its Kobe's turn, I don't think that makes him less deserving. If I could change anything, I would wait until after the playoffs to award the MVP. I know there is a Finals MVP Award, but I think combining the two would give you the true MVP. JMHO

Chris Paul should be MVP

Its not that Chris Paul will win one someday, its he deserves it NOW. Kobe is a great player but, so is Duncan, Howard, Hamilton, Nowitzki, Nash and so on. Paul has taken a team that wasnt on the radar in the preseason to the second best team in the West. How many players can a casual fan name on the Hornets? I will be willing to bet they could guess more Laker players. Here are a few stats to chew on...

                                                                                                     AVERAGES  FOR  THE  YEAR

PTS         REB         AST       TTL STL      TTL TO         WINS        FG%            PTS + AST  =  PTS accounted for     Score

Kobe            28                6              5             147              257               57             46             2323 + 441  =     3205                              3

Chris            21                4            12            211              198                56            49             1684 + 925   =     3534                              5

Chris Paul should be MVP

Good job on the stats.  The funny thing about the MVP award is it is not confined to stats.  Looking at these numbers I would think they are pretty even.  You have to pick which categories are the important part of your yardstick.  Kobe gets the scoring and rebounds.  Chris gets the assists.  Those are the big three categories.  MVP voters aren't restricted to the numbers.  Kirk Gibson won the 1988 MVP for the dodgers.  He hit 290 with 25 Hrs, 76 RBIs, 31 SBs , and struck out 120 times.  Not that impressive.  His attitude made the dodgers winners though.  If you take Kobe off the Lakers and Chris off the Hornets neither team would make the playoffs.  The key here is the writers (I am assuming they do the voting here) have been debating Kobes credentials for this award for several years. Now he answered their questions.  Paul has good numbers and his team made it to the playoffs seeded second.  If his numbers had been clearly better in categories people notice then he might have made it.  As it is he didn't come that close in the MVP vote.
